This year’s prestigious Wigtown Book Festival goes online, like so many festivals in this covid compliant year.
And to avoid the full feeling of “digital disconnect” and to give a stronger feeling of attending a book event, fans were offered the chance to buy special edition bottles of second bookshop “real air” and listen to “slow-audio” recordings taken from around the festival town.
Launching the festival are bookshop owner Jayne Baldwin, Shaun Bythell (author and owner of The Bookshop – Scotland’s largest second hand bookshop in Wigtown), and Beth and Ben Porter Please of the Bookshop Band. At the town’s Martyr’s Stake, a famous memorial to those executed at the “drowning stake” in Wigtown Bay in the seventeenth century.Author Karen Campbell, who has written a short story for the festival about female ghosts haunting Wigtown’s kirkyard and nearby Martyr’s Stake.Piper Karen-Marie Keenan launches the festival at nearby St Ninian’s Chapel, where pilgrims traditionally landed as they headed for the saint’s shrine at nearby Whithorn.
